About Galerie Stylo |
After a career in marketing I decided to pursue my passion and in 2004 I opened a gallery in Bennebroek, close to Haarlem, the Netherlands. My enthousiasm for old posters has derived from the unique combination of properties they posess. Aside from their esthetic qualities, posters are witnesses to social and cultural history. Many posters tell stories about a person, event or a place. Together they give a view of history from 1880 till present day. Most major artists from the 20th century have designed posters for their exhibitions or products. Posters have yet to be discovered in the Netherlands when it comes to home decoration, especially compared to the United States. They fit in almost every interior but more importantly most people have something with a particular poster because of their hobby or profession. Aside from many foreign collectors I also have museums and institutions as clients. Several important museums have important poster collections, such as the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. The Netherlands have one museum entirely devoted to 'the art of the street': the Affichemuseum in Hoorn. When it comes to buying I maintain high standards for graphic design and art-historic significance. Availability of most posters is very limited, in some cases not more than a handful copies are known to have survived the past century. Although posters form the heart of the collection, I also offer books and graphic arts related to poster art and artists. Next to buying and selling I also search, advise and take consignments. Opening times of the gallery vary, so it is adviseable to call if you're planning a visit. You're very welcome! Rob van Vulpen
